About
A house built for slow tropical days
Sekku House is a privately hosted villa in Unawatuna, on the south coast of Sri Lanka, a few kilometres from Galle Fort. It is one house, looked after by its own host — not a hotel chain.
The house
The house stands on two floors under a steep terracotta roof. Timber balconies with turquoise railings wrap the upper storeys, and on the ground floor a run of white arches and slim turquoise pillars opens the veranda to the garden. In the evening the whole façade is lit, and the pool in front turns bright blue.
Inside, the look is pared back and cool: white walls, polished cement floors, antique timber wardrobes, carved chairs and local paintings. The 3 bedrooms are air-conditioned and each has its own bathroom. Shared spaces include a living room, a fitted kitchen, a bar counter, an open-air lounge under the palms and dining tables along the veranda.
The garden is planted thick with palms, banana plants and ferns, with stone seats beside the pool and a vintage jeep parked on the driveway.
